Against All Odds Premiered July 2013
Statistics is a vital part of our everyday world, not the lofty realm of advanced
mathematicians! In our 32-part educational web series Against All Odds, we use historical
and contemporary examples to show students real world applications of statistical
concepts. Like our broadcast programs, this series aims to entertain while presenting
sound science.

Hosted by Harvard Computational Geneticist Pardis Sabeti, the current series is an update of the
original
– but the goal of the series remains the same: to breathe a bit of excitement into
what students might assume is a dry, complicated topic.
With segments about manatees and powerboats, the changing sizes of Army soldiers,
quality control at a potato chip factory and a happiness survey sent to one city’s
entire population, we show how to “do” statistics with real examples.
The Against All Odds website will go live in Summer 2013 and include additional
resources for teachers and students.
Produced by Chedd-Angier and the Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications,
with funding from The Annenberg Foundation.
