Scientific American Frontiers with Alan Alda
Broadcast on PBS from 1990-2005
We created the magazine-format Scientific American Frontiers as a complement
to series like Nova and Nature, which devote each episode to a single
subject. Our aim was to make faster-paced programs, engaging but always informative.

Frontiers became a popular part of the PBS national primetime schedule, running
for 15 seasons from 1990 to 2005.
For most of those seasons Alan Alda, the well-known actor, author and science-buff,
was host of the series. Alan’s terrific sense of humor and infectious enthusiasm
made complex subjects both entertaining and enlightening.
For our work with Frontiers, we received the Council of Scientific Society Presidents’
Sagan Award, “For outstanding achievement in improving the public understanding
and appreciation of science.”
The web sites for all 96 Frontiers episodes are online at PBS, including
special features, teaching guides, transcripts and more. Some video for the series
is also available on the PBS site, and we are working to get the entire series online
soon. 18 episodes are available via iTunes and Shop PBS sells
selected DVDs.
